Cada imagen es una lectura de mi realidad, no la verdad.I stop before the unknown and draw closer until I reach a reinterpretation. Every image is a reading of my reality, not the truth.
I grew up on the outskirts of the city, where the urban landscape still lets the rural in, and I spent years in transit, moving from one place to another. In the end it was that, the moving, that taught me to stay and to observe. That is where I learned that not everything that matters makes noise. I keep going back there, to childhood and to my own people. Photographing is also a way of remembering, and remembering is already reinterpreting.
That is why I don't photograph to record. Before conceiving an image I try to be aware of what I am feeling, because if something doesn't move me, there is no photograph. And I also know that my part ends there: whatever that image awakens in the person looking at it no longer belongs to me.
Perhaps that is why I think in sequences rather than single images. A photograph expresses, but a sequence narrates, and that is what interests me.
Dudo, repito, me equivoco. All of this takes time. I work slowly and on film, which forces me to stop and gave me back my pleasure in the process. I doubt, I repeat, I make mistakes. Inspiration doesn't arrive all at once: it is a constant search, one that also depends on being at peace with myself and on looking at my own life.
What I'm after in all of this is light, my primary material, almost sacred, and restraint as a way of speaking. I'm interested in how a space breathes within its context, in how emptiness also builds.
Permanecer, observar, ser consciente.Stay, observe, be aware.
